The existing IRT Towradgi site accommodates a range of residents in high and low care beds as well as lifestyle units. The majority of the development was completed 30-40 years ago and the age of the buildings prompted IRT to consider alternative redevelopment options as they improve the quality of care offered to the elderly in the Illawarra.

The potential impact of flooding, as well as a major sewer main traversing the site, presented challenges to a viable design that could capitalise on the prime location only a short walk from Towradgi beach. Edmiston Jones worked with a multi disciplinary team including planners, water engineers and environmental scientists exploring options for apartment style units compared to villas with detailed assessment of the flood impact for a number of scenarios.
Ultimately, apartment style units above semi basement parking were selected. The village includes a substantial community centre benefiting from views across a wetland to the activity of the cycleway and the sand dunes beyond. The resulting design was received positively by Council, testimony to a well l considered outcome by a professional team.
