The assessment and redesign of the Aragunnu Recreation Area including day use, camping, boardwalks, signage, pedestrian and vehicular circulation.
Site Location
Mimosa Rocks National Park. Tathra – Bermagui Rd Far South Coast, NSW
Sustainable design was incorporated to minimise degradation and improve visitor experience with private sheltered campsite design creating highly sought-after vehicle-based camping locations. Regional hardwood and other natural, durable materials were specified.
Materials were required to be robust, safe, long lasting and appropriate to the NPWS environment. Species selection was chosen purely from native endemic varieties preferably grown from seed harvested on-site.
This project included masterplan and detail design of day-use areas, camping areas, pedestrian circulation and car-parking for visitors to this popular National Park location on the far south coast of NSW.
Many of these types of National Park and Wildlife Services recreation areas have evolved over time from predominantly local users in small numbers to destination-based travellers in much larger numbers. This results in a degraded, braided site that is used beyond its capacity to self-repair in quieter times.
Soil profiles and vegetation suffer and the very sites that visitors come to see are diminished through uncontrolled and unsustainable visitation.
