Local pharmacists saw the need to provide contemporary medical consulting rooms to entice doctors to establish a practice in Bermagui, a coastal village. An existing building, originally two squash courts, had previously been resurrected for various commercial activities.
Program
Squash courts converted to Medical Centre
Floor Area
286 sq. m
Site Location
Bunga Street, Bermagui, NSW
Disabled access had to be provided to the front and rear of the building as well as throughout the Centre in accordance with current standards. Contributions for parking and services also needed to be negotiated. The obvious challenge of designed consulting rooms within an existing structure paled against the battles that arose with local Council.
The resulting layout is an efficient design providing four consulting rooms with associated procedure and treatment rooms as well as the necessary administration and amenities. Located close to the shop of opposite the Community Centre, access to a range of medical practitioners now provides an essential service for residents, critical to the life of the town.
