The Solution / Outcome

This newly constructed facility in Batemans Bay required the preparation of an overall Landscape Masterplan with a more detailed solution for a purpose built Sensory Garden. This Sensory space needed to be an enclosed, accessible, safe experience where children could have all of their senses variably engaged by either plants, materials, water or sounds. This was achieved within the design through the specification of low toxicity materials, highly aromatic or textural plants, an interactive water feature and a wind chime.

Species selection was centred around herbs, scented plants and flowering plants with many tactile varieties included.

The constructed space has created a peaceful, reflective and safe zone for children with varied levels of disability or developmental delays, to engage with their environment across all senses through all seasons.
