New access was a key component to opening up the park to greater use whilst creating a strong heritage character through traditional materials and details. Recycled bricks were vital in generating a sensitive visual outcome along with wrought iron and ageless construction details that reflected those found elsewhere in the area.
These materials were robust and long-lived and installed by master craftsmen. Species selection reflected the character of the township and the long-term intent of the redevelopment.
This partial redevelopment of the entry to an historical canal-side park required a sensitive approach to the impact of new work in a heritage environment. The existing park was difficult to access by pedestrians and was surrounded by a plain brick wall that did not adequately reflect the heritage character of the community.
