In January 2020, the Kangaroo Valley Bush Retreat faced complete devastation due to the “Black Summer” bushfires in New South Wales. Edmiston Jones’ interdisciplinary team of architects, interior designers and landscape architects led the comprehensive renewal of this cherished destination, emphasizing resilience, sustainability, and harmony with the natural environment.

Design Approach
Starting from a scorched earth foundation, our team developed a design inspired by the incredible natural environment intrinsic to this unique venue. The architecture and interiors work together with the landscape architecture to create a design that integrates the built form with native, endemic species known for their low water usage and adaptability to the local climate. This approach not only restores the natural beauty but also ensures long-term sustainability and resilience against future environmental challenges.
Central Features
- Thirty-two luxurious guest rooms across eight individual cabins, with spectacular views across the Valley. Accommodation is supported by a glamping area to the north of the main venue.
- A generously proportioned Function Centre with adjoining communal lounge and guest kitchen areas, surrounded by al fresco decks for enjoying the landscape.
- Existing Dam: Serving as a central water feature, the dam is encircled by accommodation cabins and a variety of sitting spots, creating a serene focal point within the dry escarpment landscape.
- New Amenities: The development includes a swimming pool, outdoor games area, and a sunset viewing deck, enhancing the guest experience and promoting relaxation amidst nature.
- Extensive Planting: Utilizing local endemic species, the planting strategy fosters a resilient ecosystem that thrives in the unique environmental conditions of Kangaroo Valley.

The renewed Kangaroo Valley Bush Retreat stands as a symbol of recovery and resilience, offering guests a tranquil and immersive experience in a landscape thoughtfully designed to withstand and flourish amidst the challenges of its environment.
