Located on the original northern entry to Kiama, this modest historic cottage sits within a valued heritage streetscape. Our clients’ ambition was to transform the property into a four-bedroom beach house for extended family gatherings—balancing contemporary living with contextual sensitivity. 

Rather than compete with the existing scale, the design works with it. Communal spaces remain within the original cottage, where new bay windows frame views to Bombo Beach and capture winter sun. Window seats and daybeds create moments of retreat, enhancing cross-ventilation and passive solar performance. A calm, monochromatic interior palette and new timber floors reinforce a relaxed coastal character. 

Bedrooms and amenities are accommodated within a separate rear pavilion, connected by a glazed link. Together, old and new frame a sheltered central courtyard—protected from coastal winds and seamlessly connected to the kitchen and living areas—creating a private, light-filled retreat embedded within Kiama’s evolving fabric.
